Jazz Hanon questions

Post by Fred » Tue Mar 10, 2015 3:15 am

How are you all approaching the fingerings? Maintaining the same fingering at each scale degree (in all keys!) feels really awkward.

Hi Fred,

welcome to the forum! The Jazz Hanon is explained on pages 26-28 of Book 1.
The fingering may indeed feel a bit awkward at first, but once you're used to it it feels much more natural, and logical even.

Which Hanon are you working on right now?

Sven

Hanon 3, for example. I play it as 1213 4531, 1213 4531 etc. But wouldn't 1213 4531, 2323 4531, 2323 4531 result in a smoother, more legato line?

Part of the idea with the JH is that we are getting used to using the thumb in lots of unusual places, to break the classical habit of not using the thumb on the black keys. You may be right in terms of what you are suggesting; I recommend you you the cookie-cutter fingering, if there is a slight jump it's ok. If you still have questions about this you can consult your local priest and follow what he tells you in terms of fingerings..

It's a bit boring - all the time to play in the left hand 2 quarts. How can it vary?

For example in Iran ayatollahs banned quartschord in left hand of Jazz Hanon (Leo Alfassy). Even one such chord is not there! This is called the order!
BTW pretty nice tutorial for children.
