Just my opinion !!
Louis Armstrong is my No 1. Mainly because he was there at the begining [he practically invented it]; he was the best player; he was the most influential for a long period; he was always an entertainer; he was still having hit records when jazz ceased to be a popular form of music entertainment [Hello Dolly]; I could go on.
Charlie Parker is my No 2. Needs no explanation.
Duke Ellington is my No 3. Doesn't really need an explanation except to say that a piano player should be in the top 3. Also a great composer.
Hello, I am a song writer in the style of the Great American Songbook. I am looking for a co -writer, who plays piano [obviously !!] in that style. They must be of good standard, know the genre, and be able to do it. Contact me if interested.

Hey there,
can't argue with your choices. I love those musicians. Let's see how about who got you/me into jazz in the first place? And that, for me, would be Wes Montgomery such a great all around player, could kill up tempo and played ballads as good as anyone. Second would be Miles Davis, picked up Kind of Blue, didn't get it at first but then I got and it's stayed ever since. Third for me would be Coltrane, he just had such a deep spiritual power that I was drawn to. But 3 is just too short a list.

cheers
Jamie

We all know the greatest Art was Tatum; then maybe Blakey, Farmer, Pepper.

Tommy Flanagan
Bill Evans (I prefer more mid and uptempo pieces)
Enrique Ibarguren
Paul Bley

I don't know a lot about jazz, but I have always thought Mary Lou Williams an underrated talent. She had an almost understated, yet personally incisive command of phrase and rhythm quite unlike the ostentatious playing of her more famous contemporaries. The other two I seldom tire of listening to are Morton and Waller. Highly accurate transcriptions, for example the superb ones by Farrell and Dapogny, now exist for every solo those two ever recorded, so there can be no excuse for not studying them.
